Mexican Wrestling Legend Rey Mysterio Sr. Passes Away at 66, Leaving Behind a Lasting Legacy
Mexican wrestling icon Miguel Angel Lopez Dias, famously known as Rey Mysterio Sr., has passed away at the age of 66, as confirmed by his family. The announcement was made by Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide, who expressed their condolences on social media. They stated, “We regret the sensitive passing of Miguel Angel Lopez Dias, known as Rey Mysterio Sr. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and uplift our prayers for his eternal rest.”
Rey Mysterio Sr. enjoyed a lengthy and celebrated career, beginning his wrestling journey in 1976 and officially retiring in 2009. He is the uncle of current WWE star Rey Mysterio Jr. and the family’s wrestling legacy continues with Rey’s son, Dominik, who competes for WWE as well. This sorrowful event follows closely after the death of Rey Jr.’s father, Roberto Gutierrez, at the age of 76.
Before diving into the world of wrestling, Mysterio trained as a boxer but soon found his passion in wrestling through his trainers. He made his professional debut in January 1976 and went on to compete for several promotions including Pro Wrestling Revolution, Tijuana Wrestling, and the World Wrestling Association.
To distinguish himself from his nephew, he was often referred to as Rey Mysterio Sr. within the wrestling community. His legacy continues through his grandson Dominik and granddaughter Aalyah, who has made various appearances in WWE programming.
Following the death of his father, Rey Mysterio Jr. shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, reflecting on his father’s exemplary life and the profound impact he had on his family. In his emotional message, he noted, “You exemplified love and unity as a husband and father. You checked every box and I picked up so many traits from you. You fought until the end with immense love for my mother, and I promise she will not be alone as we watch over her.”
Rey Jr. concluded his post with a powerful reminder of his father’s enduring spirit, saying, “You are now with God, smiling from above while we navigate life’s challenges until we meet again. You will always be cherished and remembered, RIP Pops.”
Fans on social media have rallied to support the Mysterio family, sending messages of strength and prayers during this difficult time. Dominik honored his uncle with a touching video tribute on Instagram, captioning it with “Q.E.P.D. Tio,” and adding a crown emoji, along with heartfelt images of his late uncle.
