Glasgow Set to Host Streamlined 2026 Commonwealth Games Following Troubled Bid
Scotland – Glasgow has officially been designated as the host city for the upcoming 2026 Commonwealth Games, which will take place from July 23 to August 2, 2026. This iteration of the prestigious multi-sport event is expected to be a scaled-back version due to previous challenges surrounding its organization.
The future of the 2026 Commonwealth Games was cast into uncertainty when the Australian state of Victoria withdrew its hosting bid last year, citing escalating costs. However, the Scottish government signaled support for Glasgow last month, paving the way for the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) to confirm the city as the new venue on Tuesday.
In this streamlined format, the Games will feature a total of 10 sports, a significant reduction from the 19 sports that were part of the 2022 Games held in Birmingham, England. Notably, para sports will be prominently integrated into the program, emphasizing inclusivity as one of the distinguishing factors of this Games, with six para sports set to be included.
The confirmed sports for Glasgow include athletics and para athletics, swimming and para swimming, artistic gymnastics, track cycling and para track cycling, netball, weightlifting and para powerlifting, boxing, judo, bowls and para bowls, as well as both 3×3 basketball and 3×3 wheelchair basketball.
Certain sports featured in the 2022 Games will be absent in 2026; these include triathlon, diving, hockey, T20 cricket, squash, badminton, and rugby sevens. Approximately 3,000 athletes from around 74 Commonwealth nations and territories are anticipated to participate in the event.
