Plymouth Argyle will look to build on their historic victory as they continue their FA Cup journey and fight for survival in the Championship.
Liverpool, England – In a shocking Emirates FA Cup upset, Championship side Plymouth Argyle knocked out Premier League leaders Liverpool with a narrow 1-0 victory on Sunday. The win marks one of the most significant achievements in Plymouth’s history, as they continue their battle against relegation in the second tier of English football.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot opted to rest several first-team players for the fixture, a decision that ultimately backfired as his side failed to break down a determined Plymouth defense. The match was decided by a second-half penalty, which the underdogs converted to secure their place in the next round.
Slot Reacts to Defeat
Speaking after the match, Arne Slot acknowledged his team’s underwhelming performance and credited the opposition for their resilience.
“The result is clear—it’s a major disappointment. Our performance left little to be pleased about. However, one positive takeaway is that the team fought until the very end. The last 10 minutes were probably our strongest phase, which shows the players never gave up,” Slot said.
He further admitted that the decisive penalty was fairly awarded and ultimately changed the momentum of the game.
“Credit to the opposition—they had a solid game plan, worked incredibly hard, and deserved the penalty they were awarded. It was a clear decision, and it significantly influenced the game. With both teams struggling to create chances, the penalty changed the momentum. They took the lead and defended resolutely until the final whistle. Their goalkeeper made one or two crucial saves at the end, but overall, we failed to create enough opportunities.”

Liverpool’s Season So Far
Despite the FA Cup setback, Liverpool remain in excellent form this season. The eight-time FA Cup winners currently top the Premier League table and have already secured a place in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 after finishing first in their group.
The Reds have also reached the Carabao Cup final, where they will face Newcastle United after a commanding 4-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the semi-final second leg at Anfield.
Upcoming Fixtures
Liverpool will now shift focus to the Merseyside derby against Everton on Wednesday night. A victory would see them extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table to nine points over second-placed Arsenal.
Meanwhile, Plymouth Argyle will look to build on their historic victory as they continue their FA Cup journey and fight for survival in the Championship.
