San Diego, CA – Golf legend Tiger Woods has announced his withdrawal from the 2025 Genesis Invitational following the recent passing of his mother, Kultida Woods. The 15-time major champion and tournament host shared the news on Monday, stating that he is still processing the loss and is not ready to compete.
“I planned to tee it up this week, but I’m just not ready,” Woods, 49, wrote in a post on X. “I did my best to prepare, knowing it’s what my Mom would have wanted, but I’m still processing her loss. Thanks to everyone who has reached out. I hope to be at Torrey later in the week and appreciate the continued kindness since my Mom’s passing.”
The Genesis Invitational, a PGA Tour Signature Event with a $20 million purse, was originally scheduled to be played at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades. However, due to the recent Los Angeles wildfires, the tournament was relocated to Torrey Pines in San Diego. The event benefits Woods’ TGR Foundation, a charity dedicated to providing educational opportunities for underserved youth.
Woods’ Recent Struggles and Injury Comeback
Tiger Woods’ withdrawal postpones what would have been his first official PGA Tour start of the 2025 season. The golf icon has played a limited schedule since suffering severe leg injuries in a car crash in February 2021. His last official PGA Tour appearance was at the 2024 British Open, where he missed the cut.
In September 2024, Woods underwent surgery on his lower back, adding to the series of injuries that have plagued his career. He made a brief return in December, competing alongside his son, Charlie, in the PNC Championship, a relaxed 36-hole event. He also participated twice in January in the indoor team golf league he co-founded, but has yet to return to full tournament action.
Despite his limited play, Woods remains an influential figure in the sport. His presence at the Genesis Invitational as a tournament host is expected later in the week, though he will not be competing.
Woods has a strong history at Torrey Pines, where he has won eight times, including the 2008 U.S. Open in a legendary playoff victory over Rocco Mediate. While his latest setback delays his highly anticipated return, fans and fellow players continue to show their support as he navigates this difficult period.
What’s Next for Woods?
With his withdrawal from the Genesis Invitational, Woods’ next potential competitive start remains uncertain. He has previously stated that he hopes to play in one tournament per month in 2025, leading up to the Masters in April, where he has won five times. However, given the emotional toll of his mother’s passing, his schedule may change.
The golf world will be watching closely to see when Woods decides to return to action. For now, his focus remains on his family and processing his loss.
