Elon Musk Claims Major Cyberattack Targeted X, Formerly Twitter
Elon Musk has announced that the social media platform X, previously known as Twitter, experienced significant outages due to what he described as a “massive cyberattack” on Monday. In a post on the platform, Musk stated, “There was (still is) a massive cyberattack against X,” without providing any supporting evidence for his claim.
This assertion follows a similar occurrence last year when Musk attributed a crash of the site to a cyberattack during a scheduled interview with former President Donald Trump. On Monday, Musk referenced a post shared by the DogeDesigner account, which has drawn speculation on Reddit regarding its possible connection to Musk himself.
The DogeDesigner post highlighted protests against the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a body that Trump has associated with Musk, as well as reports of vandalized Tesla dealerships. This led to conjecture that the cyberattack might be indicative of escalating hostility directed towards Musk.
Musk, who also leads Tesla, elaborated in his post that executing an attack of this scale would require substantial financial resources, prompting a question from another user, Jammies: “Who has the resources to fund this?” He speculated that such an operation could originate from a nation-state or an organized group with significant capabilities.
As users reported difficulties accessing X, monitoring platform Downdetector received tens of thousands of outage notifications. Initial reports emerged in the early hours of Monday, with users across Asia, Europe, and North America experiencing issues. At one point, more than 40,000 individuals reported difficulties connecting to the site, primarily through smartphones, though users attempting to access the platform via web browsers also faced challenges.
Since Musk’s acquisition of Twitter for $44 billion in late 2022, the platform has seen a notable reduction in its workforce, raising concerns regarding its capacity to maintain security and stability amidst these ongoing disruptions.
