The 2Africa submarine fibre optic Cables, a project funded by Meta and other telcos to interconnect Africa to Europe and the Middle East, has successfully landed in Ibeno in Akwa Ibom state, South of Nigeria.
The landing of the 45,000km submarine cable connecting Akwa Ibom, Nigeria’s South-South region with Europe, Asia, and other parts of Africa en route the Atlantic Ocean is a major achievement to further Nigeria’s connectivity to the world.
In a ceremony to mark the landmark project held at Qua Iboe beach (Behind ExxonMobil Qua Iboe Terminal), in Ibeno Local Government Area, the Governor of Akwa Ibom state, Pastor Umo Eno stated that the 2Africa Submarine Fibre Optic Cables landing was a monumental project that will put the State on the map of ICT innovation, economic and technological benefits around the world.
According to the Governor Eno, “It is befitting that you have decided to launch a signature project today in Akwa Ibom. I just want to thank God for the things that you have brought here to us. We celebrate you and we just want to assure you that we will do all we can to support this project.
“While we celebrate this great effort that would engrave Akwa Ibom State on the map of ICT innovation as well as economic and technological benefit around the world.
” we want to reassure our people of our readiness to partner with creative entrepreneurship projects and support them to thrive,” he said.
2Africa is an international submarine telecommunications cable that circumnavigates the coastline of Africa to interconnect Europe and the Middle East. It is funded by a consortium of companies including several telcos and Meta.
2Africa project is constructed by Alcatel Submarine Networks. It passes from Europe through the Atlantic Ocean and Indian Ocean, and then back into Europe via the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea
The Akwa Ibom phase of the project is handled by the Nigerian Equinix Company, MainOne.
