In a recent address at the 45th Kaduna International Trade Fair, the Executive Vice Chairman of the National Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Aminu Maida, reiterated the commission’s directive to telecom operators regarding the linkage of National Identification Numbers (NIN) to Subscriber Identity Modules (SIM).

Represented by Mr. Reuben Mouka, the NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Dr. Maida emphasized the critical importance of this measure for national security.

He reaffirmed the February 28, 2024, deadline for telecom operators to disconnect phone lines of subscribers who fail to link their NINs to their SIM cards.

Dr. Maida underscored the alignment of this directive with the commission’s objectives of promoting local content development in the telecom industry.

He also highlighted the NCC’s commitment to protecting consumers’ rights and ensuring their satisfaction.

Dr. Maida mentioned the establishment of the Telecom Consumer Assistance, Resolution, and Enquiries (TELCARE) Desk at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja, aimed at addressing customer issues and facilitating the resolution of telecom consumer complaints.

Furthermore, Dr. Maida urged telecom firms to prioritize customer satisfaction and uphold the highest standards of service delivery. He referenced the implementation of approved Harmonised Short Codes for providing services to Nigerian telecom consumers, enhancing accessibility across all networks.

Additionally, he noted that as of 2023, the telecom industry’s contribution to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) stood at 13.5%, according to the Nigerian Gross Domestic Product Report of November 2023 by the National Bureau of Statistics.
