SoftBank Group to Acquire US Semiconductor Firm Ampere for $6.5 Billion Amidst AI Demand Surge

In a significant move to bolster its portfolio in the artificial intelligence sector, SoftBank Group announced on Wednesday that it has finalized a deal to acquire Ampere Computing, a US-based semiconductor company, for $6.5 billion. The acquisition is contingent upon regulatory approval, according to SoftBank’s official statement.

Ampere Computing specializes in the design of chips that prioritize high performance, energy efficiency, and sustainability, specifically for AI applications and is built on the ARM compute platform. SoftBank Group already holds a majority stake in Arm Holdings, which provides technology found in 99% of smartphones globally.

The transaction, which is anticipated to be finalized in the latter half of 2025, underscores SoftBank’s aggressive strategy to enhance its presence in the AI landscape. Earlier this year, SoftBank Group partnered with OpenAI to establish a joint venture aimed at delivering advanced AI solutions to corporations.

Both companies have been collaborating on the Stargate initiative, a substantial project promoted by former US President Donald Trump, which aims to invest up to $500 billion in developing artificial intelligence infrastructure across the United States.
