The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken action against Dangote Group officials, summoning them to Abuja for an inquiry into alleged forex crimes spanning nine years.
The investigation revolves around suspected forex allocation abuse during the tenure of former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele. EFCC operatives conducted a raid on the group’s Lagos headquarters, seizing sensitive documents relevant to the ongoing probe into Emefiele’s alleged misuse of power in forex allocation.
Despite the confiscation of documents during the Lagos operation, the EFCC expressed dissatisfaction with the content and subsequently summoned top Dangote officials to provide detailed documents at its Abuja headquarters.
Dangote Group, led by Aliko Dangote, currently in the US, plans to address the matter personally upon returning to Nigeria next week. An official from the company affirmed their cooperation, stating that they are diligently gathering the requested documents to demonstrate the innocence of the Dangote Group.
According to a highly placed EFCC official, senior executives of the company have been tasked with supplying the commission with “detailed and unambiguous documents on the demands by the commission.” The Dangote officials are expected to present themselves at the EFCC’s office in Abuja on Tuesday.
The EFCC official emphasized that the commission’s objective is not to engage in witch-hunting but to obtain evidence and details concerning the allocation of government funds. Despite the initial surprise at the EFCC’s visit to their Lagos office, the Dangote Group remains committed to cooperating with the investigation.
