The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) says Peter Obi’s name has been uploaded to the INEC portal as the party moves forward with the nomination of its presidential candidate for the next general election.
The announcement was made on Monday by the party’s National Leader, who said the upload followed the restoration of the party’s access to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) nomination portal despite an ongoing legal dispute over the party’s status.
However, as of the time of filing this report, INEC has not publicly confirmed that Peter Obi’s name has been uploaded to the INEC portal, making the announcement solely the party’s position.
NDC says Peter Obi’s name has been uploaded to the INEC portal
According to the NDC, the party has already filed an appeal against a recent court judgment and submitted an application for a stay of execution, both of which have been served on the INEC Chairman and the electoral commission.
The party said Peter Obi’s name was successfully uploaded to the INEC portal, while the name of its vice-presidential candidate will be uploaded after the completion of the required legal documentation.
“My name and that of the presidential candidate have been uploaded to the INEC portal, while that of the vice-presidential candidate will be done tomorrow upon completion of the deposition. The process is also ongoing for other candidates,” the statement read.
The party maintained that it remains a legally registered political party and insisted that all its primary elections were conducted under the supervision and monitoring of INEC.
Why the upload to the INEC portal matters
The NDC said the emergence of candidates for all elective offices has been completed, leaving only the administrative process of submitting candidates’ names through the INEC nomination portal.
According to the party, the current electoral timetable gives it until July 11 to upload the names of National Assembly candidates and until July 17 to submit governorship and State House of Assembly candidates.
The party urged its members and supporters not to panic, expressing confidence that there is enough time to complete the nomination process for all candidates before the deadlines.
Has INEC confirmed Peter Obi’s name was uploaded to the INEC portal?
No.
Although the NDC says Peter Obi’s name has been uploaded to the INEC portal, the Independent National Electoral Commission has not issued an official statement confirming the claim or verifying that the nomination has been accepted.
The party acknowledged that disagreements arose during its primary elections but said reconciliation efforts have begun to unite aspirants and stakeholders nationwide. It also assured unsuccessful aspirants that they would be accommodated in campaign structures, committees and other party activities.
The National Leader congratulated all successful candidates and called for the protection of Nigeria’s multi-party democracy.
The statement further commended INEC for what it described as professionalism throughout the party’s registration and nomination processes while urging the electoral commission, the judiciary and security agencies to remain impartial as the legal dispute continues.
According to the NDC, the appeal and accompanying applications are now before the courts, and the party expects the matter to be determined in accordance with the law.
For now, the claim that Peter Obi’s name has been uploaded to the INEC portal remains the position of the NDC, pending any official confirmation from INEC.
