Delta State Government Mediates Peace Amidst Ethnic Tensions in Warri

Parties urged to prioritize peace and harmony for the interest of Delta State

The Delta State Government has intervened in the ethnic tensions in the Warri South Local Government Area.

Following a meeting convened by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr Kingsley Emu, representatives from various communities including Agbara Warri kingdom, Okere Community (Warri), Itsekiri National Youth Council, and Urhobo Progress Union Youth Wing Worldwide, alongside security agencies and senior government officials, came together to address the simmering discord.

After extensive deliberations marked by mutual respect and a shared commitment to the well-being of Warri Township and Delta State as a whole, the parties reached several resolutions aimed at preserving the existing peace:

The status quo regarding the naming of sections within Warri Township will be maintained, rejecting the proposed designation of parts as “WADO CITY.”

The headquarters of Urhobo Progress Union (Urhobo House) will retain its official address as No. 18 Okere Road, Warri.

Additionally, the State government will reinstall the billboard for the secretariat of the Union to reflect this agreed-upon address.

All parties have pledged to collaborate in ensuring peace and harmony within Warri Township, crucial for supporting the city’s renewed drive for infrastructural development.

Furthermore, the statement issued by the government emphasizes a zero-tolerance policy towards any actions that could jeopardize the peace agreement, warning of decisive measures against violators.

This intervention underscores the government’s commitment to fostering unity and stability among the diverse ethnic communities of Warri, ultimately contributing to the overall development and prosperity of the state.
