Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has sanctioned the disbursement of N280.3 million in scholarships.
These scholarships are earmarked for 13,946 underprivileged students spanning all educational levels within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The announcement was made by Dr. Danlami Hayyo, Mandate Secretary of the Education Secretariat for the FCT Administration, during a ceremony held in Gwagwalada on Thursday. The occasion also marked the rapid rehabilitation of 19 public schools across the FCT, with the event taking place at the School of the Gifted in the Gwagwalada Area Council.
Dr. Hayyo emphasized the importance of the financial allocation, stating that it is intended to ensure that “no child is left behind.” He highlighted that the scholarships will benefit both new enrollees and current beneficiaries across various educational institutions within the FCT.
Furthermore, Dr. Hayyo revealed additional initiatives undertaken by the Minister, including the revival of the school sports festival, which had been dormant for 25 years. These efforts underscore the Minister’s commitment to fostering a conducive learning environment that nurtures the dreams and aspirations of young students.
Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Hayyo emphasized the significance of the minister’s dedication to providing quality education, stating, “It is about laying a foundation for a brighter future for our children.”
Nigeria grapples with a significant challenge of over 10 million out-of-school children, with northern regions bearing the brunt of this crisis due to factors such as poverty, gender disparities, and insecurity. Efforts to address this issue include government and NGO initiatives promoting access to education, particularly for vulnerable groups.
However, sustainable solutions require comprehensive strategies encompassing economic development, security improvements, and community engagement. Only through concerted efforts can every child in the FCT and beyond have access to quality education and the opportunity to fulfill their potential.
