The Governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke has called upon the management of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) to urgently rectify the poor power situation.
The governor voiced his concerns during a meeting held with IBEDC executives in Ibadan, Oyo State, emphasizing the critical role Osun State plays in the Nigerian power sector, particularly with Osogbo hosting the National Transmission Control Centre.
Governor Adeleke expressed dismay at the ongoing erratic power supply in the state, describing it as “unacceptable” and detrimental to the local economy and businesses. He highlighted how power outages not only contribute to growing insecurity but also result in issues such as customer extortion through transformer procurement, exploitative estimated billing practices, and challenges for residents unable to afford energy due to outdated metering systems.
To address these pressing issues, Governor Adeleke revealed plans to enact the Osun Electricity System Law, aimed at establishing a Power Sector Regulatory Agency within the state. This agency will oversee the provision of electricity services within IBEDC’s franchise areas, ensuring that residents of Osun State receive fair and reliable electricity supply. Additionally, the governor outlined initiatives to introduce off-grid options and expand alternative energy sources to enhance energy accessibility and reliability.
In response to Governor Adeleke’s concerns and proposed initiatives, the Managing Director of IBEDC, Mr. Kingsley Achiefe, commended the governor for the constructive dialogue. He assured the governor of IBEDC’s commitment to collaborating with the state government to improve service delivery and address the challenges faced by their customers.
Furthermore, the Osun State Commissioner for Energy, Festus Adeyemo, reiterated the state’s determination to tackle the energy crisis by initiating projects to generate and distribute energy locally. However, Adeyemo acknowledged the significant obstacle of funding hindering the execution of these plans, underscoring the need for concerted efforts between the government and relevant stakeholders to overcome this challenge.
The meeting between Governor Adeleke and IBEDC management signifies a proactive approach to resolving the longstanding power supply issues plaguing Osun State. By fostering collaboration and proposing legislative measures, the state government aims to create a conducive environment for sustainable energy provision and economic growth.
As the discussions progress, stakeholders are optimistic about the potential for tangible improvements in power infrastructure and service delivery in Osun State. With a concerted effort towards regulatory reforms, investment in alternative energy sources, and strategic partnerships, Osun State endeavors to overcome its energy challenges and pave the way for a brighter, more electrified future for its residents and businesses.
