The Nigerian Air Force has announced plans to acquire 24 fighter jets from Italy’s Leonardo in a bid to bolster the country’s air force capabilities.
According to Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet, spokesperson for the Nigerian Air Force, the aircraft will be delivered in four batches, with each batch consisting of six jets.
The first six M-346 fighter aircraft are expected to arrive in Nigeria before the end of the year, marking a significant step in the country’s efforts to enhance its military capabilities.
This announcement follows a recent visit by Claudio Sabatino, Vice President of Leonardo, to meet with Nigeria’s air force chief in Abuja.
In addition to the procurement of the fighter jets, Leonardo will also provide a minimum of 25 years of maintenance support for the aircraft.
The decision to acquire these fighter jets comes as Nigeria seeks to address various security challenges, particularly in the northeast region where groups like Boko Haram and the Islamic State affiliate operate.
With the prevalence of insurgency, kidnapping, and banditry across the country, the acquisition of these fighter jets underscores Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening its defense capabilities and safeguarding its citizens.
