The Rivers State House of Assembly has overridden Governor Siminialayi Fubara’s veto on the Rivers State Local Government (Amendment) Bill, passing it into law despite the Governor’s refusal to assent.
The Assembly’s 159th Legislative Sitting on Monday saw the Majority Leader, Hon. Major Jack, re-present the bill, which was debated and subsequently passed with a two-third majority vote.
This move, according to them, was in accordance with Section 100(5) of the 1999 Constitution, which empowers the Assembly to override the Governor’s veto.
In a separate development, the Assembly screened and confirmed nominees for the Assembly Service Commission, including Barr. Sampson Worlu as Chairman and four others as members.
The Assembly’s assertiveness comes after it passed the Rivers State Assembly Service Commission (Amendment) Bill into law on March 22, 2024, reclaiming its power to appoint the Commission’s Chairman and members.
This is coming following months of political disagreements between Governor Fubara and the Assembly members loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike.
