Akwa ibom Monarch Released After N50m Ransom Payment

HRM Ogwong Okon A. Abang, the Paramount Ruler of Mbo Local Government Area in Akwa Ibom State, who was kidnapped on May 18 from his Ebughu palace, has been released following an alleged ransom payment of N50 million.

ASP Timfon John, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Akwa Ibom Command, confirmed the monarch’s release in an interview with reporters in Uyo. However, she did not provide details regarding any ransom payment. “Yes, it’s true,” she said about his release.

A community leader, speaking anonymously to the punch, revealed that the monarch was freed early Monday morning after the abductors received N50 million. The community is reportedly distressed, particularly due to the suspicion that some local youths were involved in the kidnapping. The leader vowed that those responsible would be held accountable.

“This incident stems from sheer greed and envy among some community stakeholders over the prestigious position the Paramount Ruler holds. Long may he reign,” the leader added.

Following his release, the monarch has been taken to a hospital for medical care. His wife, who was shot during the abduction, is recovering quickly and is expected to be discharged soon.

Report Afrique previously reported that the kidnappers attacked the palace around 9 pm on May 18, firing gunshots as they abducted the monarch and left his wife, Obonganwan Okon Abang, injured. This incident has increased concerns about the deteriorating security situation in the state, particularly the frequent kidnappings and killings of prominent individuals. The Oro ethnic bloc, in particular, is vulnerable due to its poor road infrastructure and the porosity of its waterways.
