A 45-year-old woman named Abiodun, also known as ‘Iya Sunday,’ has been arrested for allegedly setting her 86-year-old mother ablaze.

The incident occurred in Ondo City, within the Ondo West Local Government Area.

According to eyewitness Sola Oladele, the suspect arrived at her mother’s residence early Friday morning, around 5 am. Abiodun reportedly called her mother outside, doused her with petrol, and set her on fire.

In a statement, Abiodun explained her actions, attributing them to the influence of spiritual advice. “I went to a pastor for prayers, and he told me that my mother was behind my predicament. Initially, I didn’t believe it. My mother also took me to see a woman, and after my mother left, the woman said the same thing. I was told I could only be free from bondage if my mother was dead,” Abiodun confessed.

The victim was rushed to a hospital for treatment but succumbed to her injuries on Saturday.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, SP Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, stated that Abiodun would face murder charges following her mother’s death.

The police have urged the public to refrain from taking extreme measures based on unverified spiritual claims and to seek legal or professional help in resolving personal issues.
