The Nigerian Army has dealt a significant blow to illegal oil bunkering activities in the oil-rich Asa Community of Abia, destroying 14 vessels and arresting six suspects. The operation, led by the General Officer Commanding 82 Division, Major General Hassan Dada, was carried out at Isimmiri Waterside in Ukwa West Local Government Area.
According to reports, eight large Cotonou boats were among the vessels destroyed, and the operation was conducted in line with the mandate of Operation Udoka, which aims to prevent economic sabotage in the region. The suspects were handed over to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps for further investigation and prosecution.
The GOC explained that the operation was based on intelligence gathered about a sophisticated network of illegal oil thieves operating in the area. He said that the suspects had attempted to siphon crude oil from a pipeline before they were caught, and some had even sunk crude-laden boats in the water to avoid detection.
The GOC warned that the army will not tolerate any form of economic sabotage and will continue to take decisive action against those involved in illegal activities. He emphasized that the operation is just beginning, and more arrests are expected as the army works to dismantle the illegal network.
The operation has sent a strong signal that the Nigerian Army is committed to protecting the country’s economic interests and will not tolerate any form of sabotage or illegal activity that could compromise its security.
