Despite a police ban on protests, former council chairmen loyal to former Governor Nyesom Wike took to the streets in solidarity with the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Protests erupted in 21 out of 23 local government areas (LGAs) on Monday, with demonstrators gathering at council headquarters, including Buguma, where former Chairman Onengiyeofori George led a march.
Holding placards with slogans like “Sim Fubara Must Be Held Accountable” and “Asari-Toru Council Is Not a Personal Fiefdom”, protesters demanded an end to Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s perceived authoritarian actions.
The crisis, which has claimed three lives, began when police took control of local government secretariats after the former chairmen’s tenure expired.
Governor Fubara has sworn in new caretaker chairmen, but the police maintain a blockade to prevent escalation and maintain public safety.
The Rivers State Assembly members loyal former Governor Wike, passed a Local Government Amendment Bill, but Fubara refused to sign it, and the court struck down the law. An appeal court ruling is pending, which could significantly impact the political landscape of Rivers State.
The situation remains tense, with rival groups digging in their heels, as the state awaits the appeal court’s decision.
