Nigerian social media influencer and activist, Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, has been rearrested by the Nigerian police.
His lawyer, Mr. Deji Adeyanju, disclosed on Sunday that his client was apprehended for exposing an individual who allegedly defrauded a Nigerian abroad.
In a statement on his X account, Adeyanju said, “Our client, @thatverydarkman, has just been arrested by the police on the instruction of CP Igwe for exposing someone who allegedly duped a Nigerian abroad. Instead of arresting the alleged fraudster, they arrested VDM on the allegation of defamation.”
The arrest was reportedly ordered by Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory Police Command, Mr. Benneth Igwe.
This development follows VeryDarkMan’s previous legal troubles. On June 10, 2024, a Federal High Court in Abuja granted him bail, and he was subsequently released from police custody after meeting the bail conditions. The social media influencer had been arraigned on five counts of cyberstalking.
Earlier reports from May 22 indicated that the police prosecution team requested more time to respond to the application during a hearing before Justice Mobolaji Olajuwon of the Federal High Court. The court granted this request, and the blogger was remanded in the National Cybercrime Centre.
