Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Education, Mrs Idongesit Etiebet, has presented a sum of N79 million to students of the Nigeria College of Aviation Technology, Zaria, who gained admission into the institution. The students, who emerged as winners in various competitions, were awarded the cheques for their outstanding performance.
The commissioner, while presenting the cheques, commended the state government’s efforts in improving the quality of education in the state. She noted that the state-owned tertiary institutions have undergone significant transformations, with several schools receiving facelifts and accreditation restored in various courses.
Etiebet also praised the governor of Akwa ibom state , Umo Eno, for his commitment to education development, citing his administration’s initiatives such as awarding scholarships and bursaries, building model schools, and providing basic learning materials like books, shoes, and bags for students.
However, Etiebet expressed concern over an investigative report published in a local newspaper which alleged that former Governor Udom Emmanuel diverted funds meant for bursary and scholarships to students during his tenure. The commissioner described the report as untrue, stating that the allegations were baseless and unfounded.
According to Etiebet, Governor Emmanuel implemented several student-friendly policies and welfare programmes during his tenure, including granting scholarships to indigent students, subsidizing school fees in state-owned tertiary institutions, and sponsoring students in specialized fields such as maritime safety and meteorology.
The commissioner urged journalists to verify facts before publishing reports that could tarnish the image of public figures. She also encouraged students to strive for excellence and take advantage of the opportunities provided by the state government to excel in their studies.
The six students who received the cheques include Wilson Ezekiel Wilson, Daniel Priscilla Samuel, Edna Emem Akpan, Udourom Michael Patrick, and two others who won awards in Standard Pilot Course (SP35) and Air Traffic Control.
