At least six people have been killed and several others injured during an ongoing protest in Suleja, Niger State, according to Daily Trust.

The protest, which led to the blockade of the Abuja-Kaduna highway, caused significant disruption, trapping passengers and motorists for hours. Security operatives attempting to clear the barricades were met with overwhelming resistance from the protesters.

Among the deceased was Yahaya Nda Isah, a resident of Hassan Dalatu Road, who was struck by a stray bullet while riding his bike near the Suleja Police ‘A’ Division. His nephew confirmed his death, stating, “He wasn’t even protesting; he was just passing by when a stray bullet hit him in the chest. He died on the spot.”

Another victim, identified as Mallam Abu, also died at the scene. Additional reports indicate that three other people were shot at the same location, with two more shot at the Suleja Junction on the Abuja-Kaduna road. Their conditions remain unconfirmed.

The chaotic scene led to residents and shop owners fleeing for safety. Bala Abdullahi, a local resident, described the situation as dire, noting that gunshots were heard for about 20 minutes around the Emir Roundabout.

SP Wasiu Abiodun, spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, stated that miscreants attempted to set the Tafa Local Government Area ablaze but were dispersed by police and military personnel. He confirmed that the Kaduna road and toll gate have been cleared.
