Abeokuta, Nigeria – Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has sounded a warning that Nigeria is on the brink of disaster if urgent steps are not taken to address its numerous challenges.

Speaking at his Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, he emphasized the need for “moral rearmament” and warned that the country is sitting on a keg of gunpowder that could explode at any moment.

The former Head of State described the demands of the #EndBadGovernance protesters as “very legitimate” and urged the government to listen to their grievances. He lamented that successive governments have failed to build on the foundation he established, resulting in significant setbacks for the country.

The former President stressed that Nigeria needs to reform its thinking and character, saying “we must change our ways of doing things.” He advocated for a single six-year term for presidents and governors, as well as rotation of offices between regions.

A delegation of six members of the House of Representatives, led by Ugochinyere Ikenga, visited Obasanjo to seek his insights on proposed bills aimed at addressing Nigeria’s challenges. The bills propose a single six-year term, rotation of the presidency between the North and South, and rotation of governorship slots among senatorial districts.

The Ogun born politician emphasized that Nigeria needs to get it right, saying “if we get it right in about two and a half years, we could overcome some challenges, and in about 10 years, we will have a solid foundation.”

He warned that if the country fails to take courageous and decisive steps, it risks sinking further into crisis.
