Abuja, Nigeria – A shocking report by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has uncovered a massive “ghost workers” scandal in the Nigerian government payroll, with the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) being the most implicated.
According to the report, a total of 22,074 suspicious personnel were identified across various Ministries, Departments, Agencies, and tertiary institutions, with the Nigerian Police Force accounting for over 12,000 fake staff.
The ICPC found that these “ghost workers” had been receiving salaries totaling N34.8 billion between January and December 2023, despite the implementation of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).
The report revealed widespread corruption, including double salary payments, fictitious names, fake identities, and ghost workers. Approximately 4,190 former police officers were found to be still receiving salaries, with 3,228 having consistent records, while 962 had inconsistent account numbers and names.
The ICPC’s findings have sparked outrage, with many calling for immediate action to address the issue. The commission has promised to take further action to recover the stolen funds and bring perpetrators to justice.
