In a remarkable display of innovation and technical prowess, the robotics team from Whitesands School in Lagos, Nigeria, clinched the second position in the Makers League category at the 2024 Pan African Robotics Competition (PARC).
The prestigious event, held at the NBA Africa Academy in Sally, Senegal, from July 24 to July 28, saw fierce competition from students across the continent.
Whitesands School’s talented team comprising of: Adrian Okwu, Oluwafiayokunola Banjo, Chinonso Chimereucheya, Reginald Emukpoeruo, and Ugochukwuyerem Odera Onyebuagu.
Started their journey in May, the team engaged in a series of collaborative projects within the school’s Robotics Club and visited Strong Pack Limited, one of Nigeria’s few large-scale robotic manufacturing companies. Their hard work and dedication paid off as they showcased their groundbreaking project, BALL-REF, which aimed to revolutionize goal detection in football using low-frequency RFID technology.
Guided by dedicated mentors Barry Josiah, Chinedu Mama, and Kingsley Adaigbe, the Whitesands team’s success was a testament to the power of mentorship and parental support.
Their achievement at PARC has not only made their school proud but also set a high standard for future competitions.
PARC’s founder, Sidy Ndao, emphasized the event’s importance in showcasing the potential of African youth in science and technology. The competition serves as a platform to foster innovation, creativity, and collaboration among African students, empowering them to become future leaders in STEM fields.
