The Anambra State Police Command has announced the rescue of a man who attempted suicide in the Umunnachi community, Dunukofia Local Government Area of the state.
The man, identified as 27-year-old Alozie John, a livestock dealer from Isielu Local Government Area in Ebonyi State, reportedly tried to end his life due to overwhelming financial debt. John was struggling to repay a significant debt of N1.2 million owed to his livestock products supplier, which led him to take this desperate step.
Anambra State Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident in a statement released on Saturday. Ikenga explained that John’s suicide attempt was foiled after the police intercepted a conversation on WhatsApp, where he had expressed his intention to take his life.
“On August 23, 2024, Anambra police rescued a young man who attempted suicide. He was debriefed, provided with medical assistance, and is currently under safe custody for monitoring,” Ikenga stated.
The police spokesperson further elaborated that John, who resides in Umunnachi, Dunukofia LGA, had engaged the police in a WhatsApp chat where he confessed to consuming a poisonous substance, hoping it would end his life due to the financial burden of owing N1.2 million. Despite taking the harmful chemical, John reported not feeling any immediate effects.
Ikenga also mentioned that the police contacted John’s mother, who is now assisting them in evaluating his condition. Plans are underway to transfer John to a more suitable facility for proper care and further necessary support.
