The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially accredited eight universities in Togo and Benin Republic to award degrees to Nigerian students, according to the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman. Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics on August 26, 2024, Mamman revealed that three universities in Togo and five in Benin Republic have been recognized by the Nigerian government, while others operating in these countries are deemed illegal.

This decision follows the government’s recent move to revoke 22,700 certificates issued to Nigerians by unaccredited institutions in both countries. Mamman emphasized that the cancellation of these certificates is necessary to protect Nigeria’s reputation, noting that many of the invalidated credentials were obtained fraudulently. He also issued a stern warning to Nigerians with degrees from these illegal universities, particularly those in government service, indicating that they would face serious consequences.

The accredited universities in Togo include:

  • UniversitĂ© de LomĂ©
  • UniversitĂ© de Kara
  • Catholic University of West Africa

In Benin Republic, the recognized institutions are:

  • UniversitĂ© d’Abomey-Calavi
  • UniversitĂ© de Parakou
  • UniversitĂ© Nationale des Sciences, Technologies, IngĂ©nierie et MathĂ©matiques
  • UniversitĂ© Nationale d’Agriculture
  • UniversitĂ© Africaine de DĂ©veloppement CoopĂ©ratif

Mamman called on both public and private sectors to assist in identifying individuals holding fake certificates from unaccredited institutions.
