Kaduna state, Nigeria – A Magistrates’ Court in Kafanchan, Kaduna State, has sentenced 40-year-old Cletus Gandu to nine months in prison for stealing two tubers of yam.
The sentencing took place on Thursday after Gandu admitted to the theft, stating that he stole the yams because he was hungry. He pleaded for leniency during the hearing, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.
Magistrate Michael Bawa sentenced Gandu to three months in prison for criminal trespass and an additional nine months for theft. However, the court offered Gandu the option to pay a N50,000 fine as an alternative to serving the full prison term.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) had charged Gandu with criminal trespass and theft, citing violations of Sections 327 and 270 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law.
According to the NSCDC prosecutor, Marcus Audu, the complainant, Alice Daniel, reported the theft to the NSCDC office in Kafanchan on July 15. Audu revealed that Gandu had stolen the yams from Daniel’s farm in Zonkwa on two separate occasions and confessed to the crime during the investigation.
