Hamden, CT – US rapper Fatman Scoop, best known for his iconic tracks “Be Faithful” and “It Takes Scoop,” has died at the age of 53 after collapsing on stage during a performance.
The artist, whose real name was Isaac Freeman III, suffered a medical emergency while performing at Hamden Town Center Park in Connecticut on Friday evening. Despite immediate efforts by medical staff to administer CPR, he was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.
Video footage of the incident, obtained by TMZ, shows medical personnel attempting to revive Scoop on stage before he was transported away on a stretcher.
In a statement posted on the rapper’s Instagram account, his family expressed their grief: “It is with profound sadness and very heavy hearts that we share news of the passing of the legendary and iconic Fatman Scoop. Fatman Scoop was known to the world as the undisputed voice of the club. His music made us dance and embrace life with positivity.”
His manager, Birch Michael, also confirmed the news on Facebook, writing, “I love you Scoop. Thank you so much for everything you gave to me.”
Tributes from the hip-hop community poured in following the news of his death. Hip-hop star Missy Elliott tweeted, “Scoop’s voice and energy have contributed to many songs that made the people feel happy and want to dance for over two decades. Your impact is huge and will never be forgotten.”
Radio host Shelley Wade shared a photograph with the rapper, lamenting the loss: “We are losing too many of our hip-hop legends too soon. Rest easy, Scoop.”
Fatman Scoop made headlines in 2018 after a political controversy in Australia, when then-Prime Minister Scott Morrison posted a video featuring the rapper’s hit “Be Faithful.” Morrison later removed the post after critics deemed the lyrics inappropriate. Scoop responded to the incident by defending his work as a “fun PARTY SONG” and extended an invitation to Morrison for a backstage visit during a festival appearance in Australia.
