Kim Jong Un Executes Officials Amid Accusations of Negligence and Corruption Following Deadly Floods.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has reportedly ordered the execution of 20 to 30 officials following the catastrophic flooding and landslides that struck the country this summer, leading to an estimated 4,000 deaths, according to South Korean media.

South Korea’s Chosun TV, citing an unnamed North Korean official, revealed that Kim Jong Un demanded “strict punishment” for those responsible for the “unacceptable loss” of lives. The officials, accused of corruption and negligence, were reportedly executed late last month.

“It has been determined that 20 to 30 cadres in the flood-stricken area were executed at the same time late last month,” the source told Chosun TV.

While the identities of the executed officials have not been fully disclosed, the North Korean state-run media, KCNA, reported that Kang Bong-hoon, secretary of the Chagang Province Provincial Party Committee, was among those removed from their positions by Kim Jong Un.

The July floods, triggered by torrential rains, caused widespread devastation across North Korea, affecting over 4,000 homes and displacing 15,000 residents. North Korean leader personally visited the hardest-hit areas, acknowledging that the rebuilding process would take months. Temporary shelters in Pyongyang have been provided for 15,400 displaced individuals, including mothers, children, the elderly, and disabled soldiers.

Despite the reported high death toll, the North Korean leader has dismissed these figures as “false rumors,” accusing South Korea of spreading misinformation to tarnish North Korea’s international image.

Public executions in North Korea have reportedly surged since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. According to Korea Times, while the country previously conducted around 10 public executions per year, the number has skyrocketed to approximately 100 annually, a tenfold increase.
