Benin City, Nigeria – Panic gripped the student community of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Edo State on Saturday morning following the collapse of a storey building on Ekhator Street, Benin City, during heavy rainfall.
Ekosodin, which borders the University of Benin, is home to a large number of students who reside there due to limited accommodation on campus. According to reports, several students were trapped in the building, but rescue operations are underway.
Eyewitnesses confirmed that a university rescue team has already evacuated some of the trapped students, many of whom sustained severe injuries. The injured have been taken to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention.
“One of the victims who remains trapped inside the rubble managed to make a phone call, and rescue teams are working tirelessly to locate and free her,” a student at the scene reported.

At the time of this report, the university management has yet to release an official statement regarding the cause of the building collapse or the total number of people affected.
The Edo State Fire Service has also deployed three trucks to assist in the rescue operation. “Our men are on the ground to help with the rescue mission,” confirmed Sylvester, an official from the fire service control room.
Rescue operations are expected to continue until all victims are accounted for.
