Labour Party Chairman Alleges Electoral Irregularities in Edo State Governorship Election
Edo state, Nigeria – The Chairman of the Labour Party (LP) in Edo State, Mr. Kelly Ogbalo, has accused the electoral authorities of allowing irregularities to mar the conduct of the recent governorship election in the state. Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Benin, Ogbalo claimed that his party would have emerged victorious if the election had been conducted fairly.
According to Ogbalo, the election was characterized by widespread irregularities, including open vote-buying, which the security agencies failed to address. He alleged that the manipulation of results and vote-buying tactics led to a skewed outcome, which ultimately saw the APC candidate, Sen. Monday Okpebholo, declared winner.
Okpebholo polled 291,667 votes to defeat his closest rival, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who scored 247,274 votes. LP’s candidate, Mr. Olumide Akpata, trailed behind with 22,763 votes.
When asked whether the LP would challenge the result in court, Ogbalo said that the party was still deliberating on the matter and had yet to hold a state council meeting to take a position on the matter.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Okpebholo winner of the election on September 22. The LP’s allegations have raised questions about the integrity of the electoral process and whether the outcome truly reflects the will of the people.
