The ex-agitators collectively vowed that the #FearlessOctober protest would not take place in any of the Niger Delta states.
Warri, Nigeria – Over 30,000 former agitators from the Niger Delta gathered in Warri on Friday to express their opposition to the planned nationwide protest set to take place on October 1st, known as the #FearlessOctober protest.
The group, representing all nine states in the region, urged residents to refrain from participating in any demonstrations before, during, or after the proposed protest, describing the event as “self-serving.”
The ex-agitators, speaking through their leaders at a stakeholders’ meeting organized by the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP) and presided over by its Administrator, Dr. Dennis Otuaro, expressed confidence that the current administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would address the region’s challenges through dialogue and collaboration.
During the meeting, Dr. Otuaro emphasized the need to maintain peace in the Niger Delta, noting that constructive engagement with the government remains the best path toward achieving progress and development in the region.
“The Niger Delta people will not be part of any protest. The issues facing the Niger Delta will be resolved by the President, but we must ensure our region is not used as a base for disruptive protests,” Dr. Otuaro said. “We have a responsibility to ensure that our region remains peaceful and to support the Federal Government’s efforts to improve our communities.”
Paul Elvis, a prominent Niger Delta leader known as General Ogubos, also addressed the gathering. He reiterated the call for peace in the region and emphasized that “war is not the solution to the region’s challenges.”
