Lagos, Nigeria — Organizers of today’s protest against economic hardship and perceived bad governance have accused the Federal Government and security agencies of intimidation.
Despite these allegations, the organizers have vowed to proceed with the demonstration, even as the Nigeria Police Force has declared that no form of protest or procession will be allowed in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
The Federal Government, however, has dismissed the allegations of harassment and intimidation, stating that there is no need for the protest given the government’s ongoing efforts to address the nation’s challenges. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated that the administration of President Bola Tinubu is focused on ensuring peace, unity, and prosperity for all Nigerians.
IGP Orders Tight Security Nationwide
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has directed the deployment of security personnel across the country to ensure a safe and secure environment during the Independence Day celebration. According to Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP’s directive aims to prevent any threat to lives and property during the celebration.
The statement also noted that the police, in collaboration with other security agencies, will secure key locations and highways to ensure a smooth and incident-free Independence Day. Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 7, AIG Benneth Igweh, has reinforced that no form of protest will be permitted in Abuja due to a lack of formal application for such activities and intelligence reports indicating potential plans for unauthorized protests.
Organizers Stand Firm Despite Warnings
The convener of the #RevolutionNow movement, Mr. Omoyele Sowore, has stated that the protest will proceed as planned. In his remarks, Sowore emphasized that only a revolution can address the current issues plaguing Nigeria. He reiterated that the demonstrations will be peaceful and will take place across the country in response to widespread economic hardship, insecurity, and perceived misgovernance.
Nationwide Reactions Mixed
Reactions to the planned protest have varied across the country. Civil society organizations (CSOs) in Edo State remain divided on participation. While some groups, such as the Edo Civil Society Organisations (EDOCSO), have expressed support for the protest, others are opting out due to lingering tension from the recently concluded state governorship elections.
Meanwhile, coordinators of the protest in the 19 northern states have pulled out, citing concerns over the safety of protesters and the potential for violence. A statement signed by Northern Coordinators’ chairman and secretary, Mr. Abdullahi Daura and Mohammed Musa Biu, expressed apprehension over possible violence, as seen during previous protests.
Kaduna Coalition Urges Peaceful Engagement
In Kaduna State, the Coalition of Civil Society Groups has distanced itself from the protest, urging residents to focus on constructive dialogue. The group’s spokesperson, Mr. Yusuf Lawal, emphasized that October 1 should be a day to honor the country’s journey and reflect on its history rather than engage in disruptive activities.
Labour Union Warns Against Disruption at Ports
The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has urged protesters to stay away from port facilities, warning of unpleasant consequences if operations are disrupted. MWUN President-General Prince Adewale Adeyanju emphasized that while the union respects the right to peaceful assembly, it does not support activities that could interfere with maritime operations.
Security Reinforcements in Kano and Osun States
In Kano, the state police command has increased security measures ahead of the planned protests and Independence Day celebrations. Spokesperson SP Abdullahi Haruna announced that both human and material resources have been deployed to strategic locations to prevent any disruption.
In Osun State, the Coalition for Concerned Nigerians (CCN) has called on residents to join the protest against the country’s economic conditions. Addressing newsmen in Osogbo, CCN Coordinator Adetunji Ajala criticized the current administration for not responding to calls for relief from high fuel prices and widespread hunger.
