Nigerian Citizens in Lebanon Urged to Register for Evacuation Amid Escalating Conflict
The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reported that more than 500 citizens currently in Lebanon have registered with the Nigerian diplomatic mission for evacuation. Amb. Eche Abu-Obe, the spokesperson for the ministry, made this announcement during a briefing in Abuja on Sunday.
According to Abu-Obe, there are around 2,000 Nigerians living in Lebanon, but a large number have not shown interest in returning home despite ongoing encouragement from the mission. This evacuation effort comes in response to the increasing tensions stemming from the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
“The administration of President Bola Tinubu places a high priority on the safety and welfare of Nigerian citizens abroad, and emergency procedures have been put in place to facilitate their prompt and safe evacuation,” he stated. The ministry is working closely with key agencies, including the Presidency, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the Nigerian Immigration Service, to ensure an organized evacuation process.
Abu-Obe also mentioned that the Nigerian Embassy in Beirut has been proactive in issuing advisories, requesting citizens to remain indoors and adhere to instructions from local authorities. He strongly urged those who have not yet registered to reach out to the embassy via email at [email protected], emphasizing the importance of participating in the evacuation given the worsening situation.
The spokesperson praised the Nigerian community in Lebanon for their cooperation and reassured them that the government is continuously monitoring the developments surrounding their safety.
