Abure Calls for Unity in Labour Party After Court Affirms Leadership, Urges Peter Obi to Help Restore The Party

Julius Abure, the national chairman of the Labour Party (LP), has extended a call for unity within the party, particularly urging Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, to join him in healing internal divisions and strengthening the organization. This appeal came following a significant legal victory in which the Federal High Court in Abuja reaffirmed Abure’s leadership and upheld the outcome of the Labour Party’s national convention, held in March 2024 in Nnewi, Anambra State, where Abure was re-elected for a second term.

Court Validates Abure’s Leadership
The Federal High Court, presided over by Justice Emeka Nwite, ruled in favor of Abure, validating his leadership position and the legitimacy of the March 2024 convention, which elected him and other key leaders of the party. The ruling also ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize Abure’s leadership of the party, putting to rest the leadership dispute that had been a source of friction within the Labour Party.

The court’s decision was welcomed by Abure, who described it as a triumph for justice, democracy, and the rule of law. “This victory is not just mine, but a victory for justice and democracy. It confirms that the rule of law prevails, and that our party’s leadership remains legitimate,” he said.

A Call for Unity
In his statement following the court’s ruling, Abure emphasized the need for reconciliation within the party, acknowledging that internal conflicts had hindered the Labour Party’s ability to function cohesively. He urged all party members, particularly those who had opposed his leadership, to reflect on their actions and seek reconciliation.

Abure’s call for unity was particularly directed at Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections. Abure expressed his belief that Obi’s involvement in healing the party’s internal divisions would be crucial to moving forward: “I call on Peter Obi, the former Presidential candidate of our party, to help unite the party.”

He stressed that forgiveness was necessary but should come with repentance and restitution, particularly from those who had engaged in actions that undermined the party. “Forgiveness must be accompanied by repentance and restitution,” Abure said, noting that reconciliation was key to rebuilding the party’s strength and preparing for future electoral challenges.

Acknowledgment of the Judiciary
Abure also expressed his deep gratitude to the judiciary, particularly Justice Emeka Nwite, for delivering a fair and just ruling despite external pressures. He praised the integrity and courage of the court, stating that the judgment had restored his faith in the Nigerian judiciary and its ability to protect democracy.

Furthermore, Abure thanked his supporters, party members, and God for standing by him during the protracted legal battle. He noted that the victory in court was a reflection of the Labour Party’s commitment to the rule of law and democratic principles, even in the face of internal discord and external attempts to destabilize the party.

Labour Party’s Future
With this legal victory in hand, Abure called on all members to put their differences aside and work together for the common good of the party and the nation. He reiterated the need for unity, emphasizing that only through cooperation could the Labour Party achieve its goals and continue its efforts to promote good governance and democracy in Nigeria.

This call for reconciliation and unity comes at a crucial time for the Labour Party, which has faced significant internal challenges since the 2023 general elections. Abure’s leadership, now reaffirmed by the court, marks an opportunity for the party to consolidate its strength, resolve internal disputes, and focus on future political contests.

Peter Obi’s Role in the Labour Party’s Rebuilding Process
Peter Obi, who was the party’s flag bearer in the 2023 presidential election, has maintained a strong presence in Nigerian politics despite the party’s internal struggles. His role in uniting the Labour Party could be pivotal, as his leadership and popularity within the party have been a unifying force during the elections.
