Sapele, Nigeria – Former Green Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Fregene, also known as “Flying Cat,” has passed away. His death was announced on Sunday by former teammate and friend, Segun Odegbami.

Fregene, who had been battling a prolonged illness, died in the presence of his wife, Tina, and two of his children. He had been on life support for the past week before passing away.

Odegbami had previously solicited financial assistance for Fregene’s medical care, revealing that he was hospitalised in Sapele, Delta State, and required urgent medical attention. Although some funds had been provided by Tony Ojesina to cover ambulance costs, Odegbami highlighted the need for additional support to transfer Fregene to a teaching hospital for further treatment.

In a statement, Odegbami expressed his sorrow over the lack of a functional welfare scheme for retired athletes in Nigeria, which contributed to Fregene’s struggle for adequate medical care.

Reflecting on Fregene’s legacy, Odegbami wrote: “A few minutes ago, Peter ‘Apo’ Fregene, OLY, former goalkeeper for Nigeria’s Green Eagles, who has been on life support for the past one week, passed on to meet his creator. He died quietly in the presence of two of his children and his devoted wife, Tina.”

Odegbami, speaking on behalf of fellow footballers, Olympians, and supporters, expressed gratitude to all who had supported Fregene during his final days.

Fregene’s passing marks the end of an era in Nigerian football, as he leaves behind a legacy of excellence and dedication to the sport.
