COACHELLA, CA — A Nevada man was arrested on Saturday near former President Donald Trump’s rally in Southern California, carrying a shotgun, a loaded handgun, and ammunition, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office.
49-year-old Vem Miller of Las Vegas was stopped at a security checkpoint in Coachella, where deputies discovered the firearms in his black SUV. Miller was taken into custody and later charged with illegally possessing a loaded firearm and a high-capacity magazine. He was released on bail and is scheduled to appear in court on January 2.
The Sheriff’s Office confirmed the arrest did not compromise the safety of Trump or attendees at the event. No information was released on Miller’s motives.
The incident follows two recent assassination attempts on Trump — one in Pennsylvania, where a bullet grazed his ear, and another aborted attempt in Florida. Both cases have heightened security concerns around the former president, though the US Secret Service and Trump’s campaign have not commented on the latest arrest.
Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, who addressed Trump supporters at the rally, plans to provide additional details in a briefing later Sunday.
