Ogun Digital Summit Director Encourages Youth to Harness Technology for National Development

Abeokuta, Nigeria – Sola Otesile, the Director of the Ogun Digital Summit, emphasized on Thursday the importance of cultivating a positive mindset among youth regarding the use of technology to drive national progress. He urged the younger generation to refrain from using technology and ICT tools to commit crimes that could jeopardize their futures. Instead, he encouraged them to adopt an innovative approach, leveraging technology’s potential to address a range of socio-economic challenges facing the nation.

Otesile made these remarks ahead of the upcoming fifth edition of the Ogun Digital Summit, scheduled to take place from October 29. This year’s summit, organized in collaboration with the Ogun State government, aims to expose over 5,000 young individuals to in-demand technological advancements, thereby empowering them to make meaningful contributions to the country’s development.

The theme for this year’s summit is “Innovation: Pathway to Our Nation’s Prosperity,” and it is specifically designed to inspire youth to utilize technology to tackle challenges in the fields of arts and culture. Otesile remarked, “One of the primary purposes of establishing this digital summit is to enlighten the youth on constructive and productive technology usage. Technology is a double-edged sword that can either enhance or ruin one’s life, depending on how it is utilized.”

He highlighted examples of young individuals successfully harnessing technology for legitimate ventures instead of engaging in internet scams, stating, “Many young people are leveraging technology effectively, even managing multiple jobs from home without resorting to unethical practices.”

This year’s summit will also feature feedback sessions from previous editions, alongside a startup and innovation exhibition where five standout innovations will be selected for potential investment opportunities. The four-day event will take place at the June 12 Cultural Centre, with Governor Dapo Abiodun officially inaugurating the summit.

Attendees will include notable figures such as actors Lateef Adedimeji and Kunle Afolayan, esteemed cinematographer Tunde Kelani, international fashion designer Kiki Oshibajo, Flutterwave founder Olugbenga Agboola, and Kashifu Abdullahi, Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency, among others.

Dayo Abiodun, Special Adviser to Governor Abiodun on ICT, represented by Mrs. Banjo Olawunmi from the Bureau of ICT, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to fostering a culture of digital transformation among youth and pledged ongoing support for the annual Ogun Digital Summit.

Abiodun urged the youth to seize the training opportunities presented at the summit to create a brighter future for themselves and the nation. Victor Adeleye, the convener of the summit, reiterated the objective of empowering young people to utilize technology as a tool for resolving challenges across various sectors, ultimately generating jobs and economic value that contribute to national prosperity.
