Nigeria Immigration Service Launches Advanced E-Border Solutions to Strengthen Border Security
Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced the implementation of advanced e-border technologies at over 80 crossing points nationwide, as part of ongoing efforts to bolster border security and combat trans-border crimes. Comptroller General Kemi Nandap revealed this development during her visit to the NIS Head Office in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
According to Nandap, this deployment represents the initial phase of the e-border project, which is crucial for modernizing surveillance and control at Nigeria’s borders. During her inspection at the Ogun State command, she emphasized that the reliance on traditional border monitoring methods is now a thing of the past.
The newly established e-border system allows for continuous, real-time monitoring and intelligence gathering, enhancing the NIS’s capability to effectively track and manage border activities. Nandap remarked, “Currently, we have deployed e-border solutions to more than 80 crossing points, with a second phase set to commence shortly. Our objective is to incorporate as many crossing locations as possible, utilizing technology to support our personnel in the field.”
The comptroller general also highlighted that Nigeria has over 190 designated crossing points and expressed the NIS’s commitment to covering all these sites, particularly the unmanned areas that are frequently exploited for illegal crossings and irregular migration.
“We encounter significant hurdles in these unmanned regions, which are hotspots for illegal crossings and the movement of irregular migrants. We are dedicated to mitigating these challenges by deploying technology that will enable us to monitor and secure these critical areas. We will ensure that everyone entering the country is identified, allowing us to track their arrival with accuracy,” Nandap stated.
Moreover, she noted that the e-border system would facilitate improved collaboration with other security agencies by enabling the sharing of essential intelligence.
