Kano Govt Responds to Release of Detained Minors
The Kano State government has welcomed President Bola Tinubu’s recent order for the immediate release of minors detained during the nationwide #EndBadGovernance protests.

The arrests, tied to August protests demanding greater government accountability, sparked criticism from human rights advocates and politicians alike. During the protests, which escalated into clashes with law enforcement in states like Kano and Kaduna, numerous minors were apprehended and charged with offenses, including treason and public disturbance. Outrage mounted when reports surfaced that some of these young detainees collapsed in court due to exhaustion after prolonged detention without trial.

President Tinubu’s directive, confirmed by Minister of Information Idris Muhammad, ordered the Attorney General of the Federation to expedite the release of detained minors while also launching an investigation into their arrests and treatment. “The President’s decision underscores a firm commitment to the rule of law and prioritizes the welfare of these children,” Muhammad stated.

In Kano, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf swiftly instructed the Commissioner for Justice to take immediate action to ensure the minors’ safe return. The governor’s office has been involved in extensive legal consultations about the detention’s implications and remains vocal about safeguarding vulnerable populations. Addressing public concerns, Governor Yusuf said his administration was committed to protecting the rights of children, particularly in cases involving possible government overreach.

Reports that minors endured harsh treatment while in detention fueled calls for accountability. Civil society organizations condemned the conditions, urging the government to investigate and uphold humane practices.

Governor Yusuf’s call for action highlights broader concerns regarding detainees’ welfare, with the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs now overseeing efforts to reunite them with their families and provide emotional support following their traumatic ordeal.

Attorney General Olaniyi Adegoke confirmed plans to review case files related to these minors to ensure justice and transparency in all proceedings. Adegoke emphasized the importance of fair handling, particularly when it involves young people, acknowledging that “justice must be thorough and humane.”

The response from Kano’s state government to the President’s directive has garnered attention from political analysts who view this case as a litmus test for the administration’s commitment to justice and human rights. The swift release of these minors, and the investigations to follow, will likely impact public perception of both the administration and law enforcement practices in Nigeria.

In a show of support for reform, Governor Yusuf noted, “No government can succeed in isolation; it must earn the respect and confidence of its people.”
