Abuja, Nigeria – Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has declared he is unperturbed by reports that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is planning to arrest him next week after his tenure ends.

Addressing the matter on Thursday in Abuja during the EdoBEST National Results-Sharing Session, Obaseki dismissed the purported arrest as a political vendetta fueled by “silly petitions” from adversaries.

Obaseki, who has governed Edo State since 2016, said he is ready to face any investigation and would even willingly turn himself over if needed. He stated that he has nothing to hide and emphasized the legacy his administration is leaving behind, which includes several reforms and projects aimed at improving the lives of Edo people.

“I hear that the EFCC will pick me next week after my tenure. Wherever they keep me, I’ll spend time doing research,” Obaseki remarked, underscoring his confidence in the impact of his work in the state.

The governor highlighted his administration’s focus on reforms in areas like education and civil service, noting, “We were able to focus on Edo people and the things that matter to them, reform and implement those things.” He expressed pride in his achievements and brushed aside the threats of political retribution.

Obaseki criticized what he described as a climate of bitterness and envy among his political opponents in Edo State, whom he accused of seeking to undermine his legacy. He stated, “People who have opposed me in Edo State are cruel, very wicked people, very jealous and envious… because they cannot show as much as the achievements we have made in the past eight years.”

Despite the anticipated EFCC probe, Obaseki stressed the importance of prioritizing the welfare of Nigerians and addressing the country’s pressing challenges, rather than engaging in political vendettas. “What is important is for us to focus on our people in order to make Nigeria better,” he said, urging leaders to use their positions to effect meaningful change.

He also reiterated his commitment to civil service reforms, emphasizing the need to build a functional and efficient bureaucracy that serves the interests of the people.

Obaseki concluded by reiterating his lack of fear, stating, “I’m not afraid, I’m not worried… If they call me, I don’t have anything to hide.”
