In a recent report by the Directorate of Internal Affairs (DIA), Nigeria has witnessed a remarkable 65% decrease in major crime rates across the nation, a development attributed to the effective strategies implemented by the Nigeria Police Force under the leadership of Inspector General Kayode Egbetokun.
The statistics presented by IG Egbetokun during a recent conference with police commissioners reveal a dramatic decline in crime rates. The number of major crimes reported dropped from 734 in May 2024 to 416 in October 2024, showing a clear and sustained downward trend.
From July to October 2024, the police were able to arrest 10,852 suspects and recover a substantial cache of firearms and ammunition, contributing to the overall improvement in public safety. These efforts also coincided with a notable decrease in specific types of crimes, including:
- Banditry
- Kidnapping
- Armed robbery
- Cybercrime
The reduction in these high-profile crimes has been a welcome development, especially considering the growing security concerns that have plagued Nigeria in recent years.
Police Strategies at the Core of Success
Several tactical approaches have been credited with contributing to the decline in crime rates. The police have successfully utilized:
- Intelligence-Led Policing: By gathering critical intelligence, law enforcement has been able to preemptively disrupt criminal activities before they could escalate.
- Community Engagement: Building trust and cooperation with local communities has proven crucial in the fight against crime, allowing the police to access vital information and foster stronger collaboration between citizens and security forces.
- Specialized Task Forces: The formation of dedicated units, such as the anti-kidnapping squad, has been essential in effectively targeting and dismantling organized crime syndicates.
These strategies have led to tangible results, including the successful rescue of 369 kidnapped victims and the recovery of 416 firearms, 3,672 rounds of ammunition, and 178 vehicles linked to criminal activities.
As Nigeria moves forward, particularly with upcoming elections and increased security challenges during the festive season, IG Egbetokun emphasized the continued commitment of the police to safeguarding the nation’s citizens. He stated:
“Our vigilance and commitment to enhanced security are paramount. Together, let us strive to foster a safe and secure environment for all Nigerians.”
