IOM Allocates Additional Funds for Flood Relief in Nigeria
ABUJA – As Nigeria endures an ongoing rainy season, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has announced it will release an additional $668,000 from its Rapid Response Fund to aid flood-affected communities. The organization shared this information in a press release issued on Thursday.
According to the statement, the newly allocated funds will facilitate localized humanitarian efforts through IOM’s partners, including Relief Rescue Initiative, Safer World Foundation, and Community Engagement and Social Development Initiative in the states of Jigawa, Katsina, and Bauchi. These regions are currently experiencing the severe aftermath of catastrophic flooding that has affected tens of thousands of residents.
IOM Nigeria’s Chief of Mission ad interim, Paola Pace, expressed gratitude to the USAID Bureau of Humanitarian Assistance for its substantial contributions to the Rapid Response Fund. “Their support is crucial in allowing IOM and local partners to deliver life-saving aid and assist communities as they work to rebuild and recover from the floods’ devastating effects,” Pace stated.
This year, over 1.3 million individuals have been impacted by floods across 34 states in Nigeria, resulting in at least 320 fatalities and the destruction of approximately 258,000 hectares of farmland. The disasters have led to significant displacement, with more than 740,000 people forced to evacuate their homes.
In October, IOM had already allocated $1.8 million to nine local and international non-governmental organizations for emergency flood response efforts. With this latest funding initiative, the total amount committed by IOM to support local partners responding to flooding in Nigeria has surpassed $2.4 million for 2024.
These resources will enhance the provision of essential services and support, including emergency shelters, clean water, sanitation facilities, protection, and multi-purpose cash assistance for over 228,777 individuals in need. These initiatives aim not only to meet the immediate needs of flood-affected communities but also to foster recovery and resilience.
IOM’s efforts are being coordinated closely with government agencies, local authorities, and other humanitarian organizations to ensure a comprehensive and effective response to the crisis. The organization affirmed its commitment to working collaboratively to provide timely and impactful assistance to those affected by the floods.
