Parents of Teen Lost to Sextortion Urge Nigerian Criminals to Cease Exploitation of Children
The grieving parents of a British teenager, who tragically took his own life after falling victim to sextortion, have made an emotional appeal to criminals in Nigeria to halt their exploitation of young people. Mark and Ros Dowey’s 16-year-old son, Murray, succumbed to pressures from scammers pretending to be a girl who coerced him into sending explicit images.
In a revealing conversation with the BBC, Mark Dowey described his son as “a really lovely kid” who exhibited no signs of distress. “He went up to his room, and he was absolutely fine. We found him dead the next morning,” he recounted. His wife, Ros, lamented their inability to intervene: “We had no chance to notice something was wrong and try to help or fix it.”
The Doweys expressed profound sorrow over their son’s untimely death, stating, “You’re abusing children. You’ve ended Murray’s life. How would they feel if it was their child, brother, or friend? It is incredibly cruel. This is abuse against children, all for money—this is inexcusable in any society.”
The couple also directed their ire toward technology companies, arguing they could do much more to fight against sextortion. “Social media firms have the power to significantly curb these issues, but they prioritize profits over safety,” Mark insisted. Ros added, “While they claim to care and work on solutions, they need to take real action. The technology exists to prevent many of these crimes, yet they overlook it for the sake of earnings.”
She urged others who have experienced sextortion not to feel embarrassed and to seek assistance. “Everything in life is transient. Nothing is worth taking your own life for. If you find yourself in a situation like this, disconnect from your phone and talk to someone you trust about it. Don’t be ashamed. Thousands of kids share images; it happens. But reaching out can make all the difference,” she encouraged.
The Doweys’ heart-wrenching story underscores the urgent need for awareness and stronger safeguards against sextortion and other online threats targeting vulnerable youths.
