Seventeen-year-old racing sensation Ugo Ugochukwu made history on Sunday by securing the 2024 FIA Formula Regional (FR) World Cup title during the 71st Macau Grand Prix. Driving for R-ace GP, Ugochukwu displayed an impressive performance, leading the race from the outset. Olivier Goethe of MP Motorsport and Noel León from KCMG IXO by Pinnacle Motorsport followed him in second and third places, respectively.

This triumph marks a significant milestone as Ugochukwu becomes the first American driver to win the prestigious Macau Grand Prix title in over 40 years.

Reflecting on his remarkable victory, Ugochukwu emphasized the importance of resilience and confidence in his journey. “I can’t express the feeling; I’m incredibly happy. The race was quite challenging, but I felt confident in our pace – we’ve been fast since Q2,” he stated. “Winning the Qualifying race was great, but there was still the primary race to conquer, and we achieved that. I owe a huge thanks to the R-ace GP team for a fantastic weekend. I’m thrilled to have finally secured the win.”

Ugo Ugochukwu was born on April 23, 2007, in New York City to former Nigerian queen Oluchi Onweagba. His racing career began in 2014, competing in the Micro ROK Cup USA, where he quickly distinguished himself by claiming his first American championship title that same year. His natural talent and charisma led him to win two additional American championships in both 2014 and 2015.

Expanding his horizons in 2016, Ugo participated in European series, finishing second in the Mini ROK Cup and the Mini 60 Italian Championship. The following year proved pivotal for him, as he captured victories in both the Mini X30 IAME All Star Finals and the IAME International X30 Mini Cup, establishing himself on the international racing scene.

Ugo’s dominance continued in 2018, where he clinched the Junior ROK-Challenge of the Americas championship and was vice-champion in the Junior ROK – Florida Winter Tour. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Ugochukwu’s ambitions remained steadfast. He became the inaugural member of the McLaren Junior driver program, signed by the team’s CEO, Zak Brown. That same year, he secured a second-place finish in the OK Junior Champions of the Future Championship and emerged victorious in the OK Junior FIA European Championship.

Before shifting to single-seater racing in 2022 with Carlin Racing in the British F4 Championship, Ugo concluded his karting career by finishing as the runner-up in the OK Senior WSK Euro Series in 2021. His journey in motorsport showcases an inspiring commitment and foreshadows a promising future in the fast-paced world of racing.
