Abuja, Nigeria – The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors have issued a strong warning to the Umar Damagum-led National Working Committee (NWC) to convene the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting by February 2025.
This ultimatum was given after the NWC postponed the NEC meeting for the fourth time, citing various reasons. The meeting, initially scheduled for August 15, was rescheduled to October 24, then to November 28, before being indefinitely postponed.
Key Demands by PDP Governors
- The NWC should call the NEC meeting by the first week of February 2025
- The meeting should allow for elaborate consultations with critical stakeholders of the party
- The period between November and February should be used to address existential problems confronting the party, including issues of leadership and litigations
Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, who is also the chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, read a communique to journalists, stating that the forum remains resolute in its determination to ensure unity and cohesion within the party.
The governors also expressed empathy with Nigerians who are “groaning under the oppressive economic hardship” caused by the APC-led federal government’s policies. The PDP governors urged President Bola Tinubu to reassess Nigeria’s economic and financial strategies, focusing on initiatives that prioritize the welfare and well-being of Nigerian citizens.
Furthermore, the governors pledged to aggressively pursue policies and programs that will reduce hardship and ensure progress and development. They also lamented the outcome of the Edo and Ondo State Governorship elections, which were won by the APC, and called on the judiciary to save the country’s democracy.
