Six Tourists Die from Methanol Poisoning in Laos: Government Pledges Justice Amid Warnings Over Counterfeit Alcohol in Popular Backpacker Town
VANG VIENG, LAOS– The Lao government has expressed deep sorrow following the deaths of six foreign tourists who consumed alcohol contaminated with methanol in Vang Vieng, a popular backpacker destination.
The victims include two Danes, two Australians, a Briton, and an American, who reportedly fell ill after drinking tainted alcohol in the idyllic riverside town. In its first official statement, the government said it was “profoundly saddened” by the incident and vowed to hold those responsible accountable.
Authorities are conducting investigations to determine the source of the contamination and bring perpetrators to justice, according to a statement published on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website on Saturday. The government also extended its “sincere sympathy and deepest condolences” to the families of the tourists.
Authorities Crack Down on Counterfeit Liquor
State-run news agency KPL reported on Friday that law enforcement is gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses to understand how the alcohol became contaminated. Laos has long faced challenges with counterfeit alcohol and homemade spirits, which are often sold as popular international brands.
In light of the tragedy, the Australian and British governments have advised their citizens to exercise caution when consuming alcoholic beverages in Laos. Similarly, the U.S. embassy in Vientiane issued a safety warning, urging Americans to purchase spirits only from licensed vendors and to inspect bottles for signs of tampering or counterfeiting.
What Is Methanol Poisoning?
Methanol, a toxic form of alcohol, is commonly used in industrial applications such as solvents and alternative fuels. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, methanol poisoning can cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, and in severe cases, death.
Vang Vieng, renowned for its stunning natural beauty, has seen its reputation tarnished by this tragic incident. The government’s commitment to justice and safety will be critical in restoring trust among tourists and preventing future tragedies.
