IGP Orders Probe into Stampedes, Warns Organisers Could Face Prosecution

Abuja, Nigeria – The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered a thorough investigation into the tragic boat mishap in Kogi State, which claimed the lives of 160 people.

The incident occurred on Friday along the Dambo-Ebuchi waterways of the River Niger in Kupa Local Government Area. Out of the passengers on board, 24 were rescued, while others remain unaccounted for.

In a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the IGP expressed deep condolences to the government and people of Kogi State, particularly the families affected by the disaster. He assured Nigerians of the police force’s commitment to improving waterways safety and enhancing rescue operations.

The IGP has directed the Force Marine Officer to lead a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the mishap. According to the statement, the investigation aims to identify the contributing factors and develop actionable strategies to prevent future tragedies on Nigeria’s waterways. It will also provide recommendations for enhancing safety and emergency response systems in the water transport sector.

The police, in collaboration with relevant agencies, have intensified search and rescue operations for the missing passengers. Resources and operational modalities have been deployed to aid these efforts. The IGP emphasized that the force is committed to ensuring justice for the victims while working proactively to prevent similar incidents.
