Lagos, Nigeria – A newly married couple and 16 others were injured on Saturday in a serious collision on Lagos’ Third Mainland Bridge near Ilaje, heading towards Iyana Oworonsoki.
The accident, involving a commercial LT bus (BFG 204 XF) and a mini truck (AGL 22 YE), was caused by brake failure on the bus, which was reportedly speeding. The bus crashed into the truck, which was moving slowly due to mechanical issues.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) coordinated the rescue operation with support from emergency agencies.
Sixteen passengers, including 11 women and five men, sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the Lagos State Trauma and Emergency Centre near the Toll Gate. Two passengers at the front of the bus were trapped in the wreckage and suffered severe limb fractures. They were later moved to Gbagada General Hospital for specialized care.
The newlywed couple was returning to the mainland after their ceremony at the Ikoyi Marriage Registry.
LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed sympathy for the victims, emphasizing the importance of vehicle maintenance and adherence to speed limits. He also highlighted LASTMA’s ongoing public safety campaigns targeting commercial drivers during the festive season.
The Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASABUS), Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), and law enforcement officials from Alonge Police Station ensured the smooth evacuation and restoration of order at the scene.
